Wonderland

WONDERLAND
Too late to understand
Too soon to hold a hand
I sometimes think she’s living in a dream
Tell all the pretty girls
Their minds in other worlds
I’ve only seen it on the silver screen
A line that’s taken from a page
Turns into something you would say
You’re standing on a wire
Up by the reservoir
But you don’t seem to feel the breeze at all
Not even sure you know
If just one tiny blow
Should kiss your side then you would fall
And all the playground games we played
The child dares don’t go away
I never said you couldn’t understand
I just said you live in a wonderland
And if you tumble and fall back down to earth
I’ll still be standing here
Her words like dying vines
Lost all their vital signs
The twisting of the whisper’s such a shame
The friends all told their friends
The meanings got the bends
And never once did they return the same
And when they finally reached the end
They came back round to her again
I never said you couldn’t understand
I just said you live in a wonderland
And if you tumble and fall back down to earth
I’ll still be standing here

Wake Up John

WAKE UP JOHN
Locked in a dream I found
I test my mind’s ability
At sleeping through the sound
Of engines running near to me
Won’t turn down for you
And on the ocean bed
This tireless whale that waits for war
With men inside its head
There from the day they closed the door
Won’t turn round for you
She waits and when she sees you
She is filled with joy
She waits and when she sees you
She is scared to tell you
And just because you sleep
Wake up John
You said yourself that there’s
No point carrying on
If you reveal
They’ll send you back where you
Where you came from
Great iron bridges lead us over
Places once impossible
Great stony ridges that we conquer
Wild old land so crossable
Take us under now you take us under
She waits and when she sees you
She is filled with joy
She waits and when she sees you
She is scared to tell you
And just because you sleep
Wake up John
You said yourself that there’s
no point carrying on
If you reveal
They’ll send you back where you
Where you came from
We wait for messages
To tell us that they’re alright
They wait for radios
To tell them that we’re all ok
And if there’s nothing
I’d be last of all to know
Why would you share the news with me?
Why would you let me know?
And just because you sleep
Wake up John
You said yourself that there’s
No point carrying on
If you reveal
They’ll send you back where you
Where you came from
And just because you dream
Wake up John
You said yourself that there’s
No point carrying on
If you reveal
They’ll send you back where you
Where you came from

Step Off The Train

STEP OFF THE TRAIN
Step off the train my friend
Before you reach the bend
There’ll be no turning back
If you come off this track
It’s true I can’t ignore
These echoes at my door
No season for your word
My frosted senses blurred
Melts fill you slowly
And brooks start to flow
Time for a journey
Books will teach us what they know
Where did you go?
So if I wish to look
I’d better close my book
No blueprint to your flight
Turn and you’re out of sight
No moon that inky sky
Was darker than the Poe
Oh Edgar write me stories
Where our hearts will glow
Where did you go?
Well some are here to stay
And some friends go away
No message of their flight
I guess I’ll just sit tight
Well it was winter
Someone said they saw them throw
You from the train my friend
Your footprints melted with the snow
Where did you go?
Step off the train my friend
Before you reach the bend
There’ll be no turning back
If you come off this track

Fifty & 9

FIFTY&9
For fifty and nine he swam along just fine
A mind that’s trained to see
Always would know what goes on inside
Goes on in me
And one day he fell
As deep as the well
And now a stranger seems to dwell inside
So I asked him how this stranger that bears
Is changed from days gone by
And bowed overhead
He said “the strange thing my son
is the ease with which I now cry
“For one day I fell
And how does one tell?
No way to know that this would be
Would be
The way things would turn to pass for me
“Before the memory
Recalls itself to me
This door before the street
Becomes a wall I long to fall
Becomes a wall that I am small beneath”
So take the tears that fell from you
And all the tears that fell from me
And go and see the way the water moves
And leave them to the sparkling stream
Go and see the way
the water moves for me and you
Go and see the way
the water moves for me and you
Before the memory
Recalls itself to me
This door before the street
Becomes a wall that I am small beneath

In Search Of The Delta

IN SEARCH OF THE DELTA
Say it’s a riot riot
Say it’s a golden night
Oh it’s a starry one
To not be sleeping right, right?
I never found my eye
For making hours slip by
While I lay turning
While I lay turning
If I turn upon myself
Don’t try, try to try to help
I see the sweeping plain below
And the memory of a flood in tow
And it’s lying
Lying before me
I wish that I I I
Could just walk and walk walk walk
Into its open arms
Its open arms
If I turn upon myself
Don’t try, try to try to help
I know you’re lying lying lying
next to me
Oh but your sigh and the symptoms
are telling me that
I must slide into this sleeping river on my own
And when I find that bed lying at the bottom
Well if I seem dead well then I’m sorry but
I must slide into this sleeping river
on my own
They say I’m hypnotised
They say I’m having trouble
Seeing double
Everything has slowed down
I see the arm of a giant calling
And someone else is creeping near
And I’m falling from here
As my fear of all this burns
Then I am lifted by a bird
And I’m flown flown flown back to shelter
And I’m blown blown blown until I settle
And slide into this sleeping river on my own
And when you find that bed lying at the bottom
Well if I seem dead well then I’m sorry
But I must slide into this sleeping river
on my own
I must slide into this
river on my own

A ONCE WAS TRAMP AND TREE
Tramp on the root and lean on the bark
Worn as a boot the fingers work hard
He leans on the tree by the path that he laid
The house that he built, the wall that he made
When he tried to make, he tried to make a start
Stood like a fighter leant into fire
When it grew bitter then he would tire
And beat by the fist of the wind in his face
He dug his legs in from the blusters that chased
And he tried to sing but his voice was half of heart
He stared out from his kitchen sill
And you looked down the ridge of the hill
At the man unprepared
For a storm that now stared
Down on you
So we wait for a night or two
“Oh storm I have known you all of my life
Your fear and your fury cut like a knife”
The roof of this house is torn from its walls
The look in the eye, a momentary pause
“So hit me goodbye, I’ll meet you once more I’m sure”
He stared out from his broken sill
And you gazed down the ridge of the hill
“There’s a gap in the view that each of us knew
That it’s time to fill
And I hope that we’ll make do”
So pass me down to where you once raised me
And saw this crown that I own
For I’ll be found where you will lay me
To hold these walls to keep you safe
Until the day
The storm returns

The Islander

THE ISLANDER
Take me to the bay in darkness
Through this month of nights in one
They burned oil in the starless
Pitch of night, awaiting
And you’re born
Dark gave way to dawn
They said you were a pearl
Found there on the earth
As you grew to a girl
And she faded from your life
And the current towed
You by its side
And the water sowed
A vision in your mind
Go to the bend
Know where it ends
She’s an islander and she longs to be
To be in the world she used to be
When she was a girl and she left to see
To see this world that we all see
The hares ran in the wood,
No faster than your mind
Could carry you away
To the world you longed to find
And you chose to hide
In the mountain’s edge
‘Til it burned
A vision in your head
Go to descend
Know where it ends
She’s an islander and she longs to be
To be in the world she used to be
When she was a girl and she left to see
To see this world that we all see
And they rose
Until we heard them roar
And they burned
Until they could burn no more

Wanted

|

WANTED
See all you know
And know all you are
But are you what you you thought you were
When you saw you were wanted
Warning, warning
Give all you can
But they came and they took
Did you ever feel, ever feel wanted?
Warning, warning
Turn away
You had to leave
You never had to stay with me
Cos you’ll always be wanted
Warning warning

The Woodsman

THE WOODSMAN
You only wanted to, to be around
Or have around you no more than the sound
Of branches bowing to two fallen leaves
You wipe your brow
And then roll up your sleeves and go home
And in the dawn you march a while
And you make sure
That your walk’s worth the mile
Throw off this shoulder onto the pile
Split with your axe
That cracks with a smile of its own
Gather as you roam - take what you get home
Smoke will coil and comb around your hand
Changing as the man
So switch the smile for the scowl
Trade in the blackbird for the owl
And if there’s history, it will be yours
You drink it swiftly
And wonder the causes of wars
Gather as you roam - take what you get home
Smoke will coil and comb around your hand
Changing as the man
And as you march down through the trees
A whisper reaches on the breeze
A golden stroke across the sky
An old and broken passer by
But you wear faces you can’t hide
The greet is met with no reply
We never look dead in the eye
We’ve never said a good goodbye
Gather as you roam - take what you get home
Smoke will coil and comb around your hand
Changing as the man

Nosediving

NOSEDIVING
I hit the light switch on the wall
He was at least fifty feet tall
He knew we’d been here before
Close behind you stood in the hall
His temper decided he wouldn’t play ball
A test flight promoter from head to the floor
’Cause we’re nosediving
We’re nosediving
I walked into the room
The man in the corner picks up his phone
He says “they come and go
With each winter’s snow when it falls
Holding their arms out ‘I love yous’
And playing the fool”
“And I’ll take you to Lima
And show you a real police chase
Ande the mountain range,
There’s a good hiding place
Will we find out some day
Bureaus decide to face?
And there’s a whole list of people
Saying this is what happened to me
But they’ve never been seen”
I asked “how have you been?”
You just stared at the screen
The news said a plane fell but nobody saw
And leaders dictate, find a scapegoat
‘It wasn’t our fault’
’Cause we’re nosediving
We’re nosediving
I think that we’re nosediving
And shattered and frightened
And everything seems out of line
But Carlos In America
Tells me they’re doing just fine

FROM THIS COUNTRY
Sold
The promises a land would bring to me
But nothing grows when nothing sows
And so it was the land deserted me
And you hit the side of my face with your right
And as pretty a sight as can be
Were stars in the skies and birds in my eyes
’Til the floor was a wall beside me
And my arms were tied
A vessel waits for me
As I grow tired
And I am lead to leave from this country
Call a man a fish my friend
But fish aren’t made for land my friend
They’re better in a dish or in the sea
Drop a penny in my glass
Mark me as a simple arse
“This town has fleas” you spit and say to me
I never really thought it would be me
I don’t get visions of the sea
And you hit the side of my face with your right
And as pretty a sight as can be
Were stars in the skies and birds in my eyes
’Til the floor was a wall beside me
And my arms were tied
A vessel waits for me
As I grow tired
And I am lead to leave
We float just like a feather
Lines written by the weather
I wonder if we’ll ever find our way back home
My legs feel tied together
We’re pulling at the tether
Can’t find a way to sever ourselves from the
Wind blows us like a feather
Lines written by the weather
I wonder if we’ll ever find our way back home
My legs feel tied together
We’re pulling at the tether
Can’t find a way to severe myself and then…
You hit the side of my face with your right
And as pretty a sight as can be
Were stars in the skies and birds in my eyes
’Til the floor was a wall beside me
A floor that reminds my country of me
From this country
